Charles L. Ilvento, 73, passed away on 3/9/14 following a series of health challenges. He was born in Jersey City, NJ and moved to Long Branch, NJ where he graduated from high school as class president. He earned a B.S. from Cornell University’s School of Hotel Administration and M.B.A. from Cornell’s Johnson Graduate School.
In 1972 he moved to Miami and was a founding professor in Accounting and Finance at the School of Hospitality and Tourism at Florida International University. During FIU’s first year he started the student newspaper in addition to his teaching duties. He also owned and operated restaurants, practiced public accounting with a large firm in NY, owned a CPA practice and was an accomplished speaker, educator and consultant to the hospitality industry. He was frequently called upon to give expert testimony in business matters over the years.
During his 35 year tenure at FIU he held leadership positions in several professional organizations. He was a founding member and past president of the Association of Hospitality Financial Management Educators. He received certification as a Certified Hotel Administrator and was the first Certified Hospitality Accountant Executive(CHAE). CHAE is the professional designation for financial managers in the hospitality industry administered by both the International Association of Hospitality Accountants and the American Hotel and Lodging Association. He later authored the CHAE Certification Manual. He authored several articles for the hospitality industry, a text book and created a computer game (Star Motel) as an adjunct to his teaching. He was an External Examiner for the University of the West Indies and a consultant to the Aruba Hospitality Trades Training Center and the Bahamas Hotel Training Council. Charles was the quality assurance consultant to the Aruba Hotel and Tourism Association. He presented to numerous groups, including the National Restaurant Association, the Club Managers Association of America and the International Association of Hospitality Accountants. A recognized authority in the industry with across the board expertise he had extensive experience in developing operating plans, procedures and evaluations to help troubled hospitality businesses effect a turnaround.
Charles will long be remembered as a loving husband, father, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin, mentor and friend. He was not only a gifted businessman, but most importantly possessed a unique ability to evaluate and appreciate what was important in life. His boundless love of family, passion for being with people, quick wit, charm, sense of humor and love of laughter will be greatly missed by all who love him.
He was predeceased by his son, Charles II, his parents, Lucille Carfora and Charles Ilvento.
He is survived by his wife, Garnet Reynolds; his daughter, Lauren; grandson, Timothy Curtin; sister, Rosemary Penta and her husband Carmen; brother,Joseph and his wife Ann.
Visitation Tues. March 18th 5 to 8 pm, at the Woolley-Boglioli Funeral Home 10 Morrell Street, Long Branch, NJ. A funeral mass will be offered We'd. March 19th, 9:30 am at the Church of Precious Blood. Interment Woodbine cemetery, Oceanport.
